The National Railroad Construction and Maintenance Association(NRC) has awarded Modern Railway Systems Chief Engineer Tom Hunter with its 2023 Field Employee of the Year award.
In presenting the award at the NRC Annual Conference in Scottdale, Arizona, on January 6, 2024, NRC President Ashley Wieland noted Hunter's outstanding performance, unwavering dedication, and remarkable contributions to Modern Railway Systems and to the railroading industry.
In his nomination letter, Modern Railway Systems Vice President Shon Tulik highlighted Tom’s attributes as an exceptional field employee. “His career, spanning over 40 years, reflects the qualities and values that this award seeks to honor: unwavering commitment to quality, a steadfast dedication to safety, exceptional customer service, and community engagement that leaves a lasting legacy.”
Tom is widely regarded for his commitment to excellence and is often cited as someone who raises the character and performance of everyone he encounters. “Tom's dedication to bettering and mentoring those around him enriches not only our industry but also the communities where we operate. He is a genuine railroader who shares his knowledge and experience, leaving a lasting impact on all fortunate enough to work alongside him,” said Tulik.
Known as a true craftsman, Tom has a well-established reputation for setting the gold standard for safety in the industry and inspiring others to deliver work of the highest quality. “He consistently goes above and beyond to ensure our clients' satisfaction. Tom's innovative thinking and dedication to delivering reliable results have earned him the respect and admiration of both our clients and colleagues,” added Tulik.
I have appreciated the opportunity to give back to the industry by participating on an NRC committee. The opportunities are diverse – from membership resources, the various events, scholarships and awards – but each committee works closely with NRC leadership to help bring all of its membership services to life. Who better to serve the industry than the very people working in it!
